Neil Gaiman on our future depending on libraries, reading, and daydreaming

On Monday, October 14, 2014, author Neil Gaiman delivered a lecture at the Barbican in London, for the Reading Agency. Launched in 2012, the Reading Agency's annual lecture series is a platform for leading writers and thinkers to share original, challenging ideas about reading and libraries.

Gaiman's lecture explains why using our imaginations, and providing for others to use theirs, is an obligation for all, and not just for the literate. He recounts an anecdote that cites reading science fiction as a distinct advantage. Though traditionally disparaged as escapist, science fiction does fuel the reader's imagination, inspiring many to imagine, invent, and create the worlds of their temporary escape.

I was in China in 2007, at the first party-approved science fiction and fantasy convention in Chinese history. And at one point I took a top official aside and asked him Why? SF had been disapproved of for a long time. What had changed?

It's simple, he told me. The Chinese were brilliant at making things if other people brought them the plans. But they did not innovate and they did not invent. They did not imagine. So they sent a delegation to the US, to Apple, to Microsoft, to Google, and they asked the people there who were inventing the future about themselves. And they found that all of them had read science fiction when they were boys or girls.

If science fiction author William Gibson had not published his seminal novel Neuromancer, influencing many readers to become scientists, programmers, et al, would the world today exist as it does? There is a definite connection between being able to read and realising the world of one's dreams. More »

The Man With 59,000 Books -- In His House

A former professor of Slavic languages at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Lawrence L. Thomas, found an escape in books as a child. When his wife died in 1976, he devoted himself entirely to books. When he died in February 2013, aged 88, his modest 2,514-square-foot house contained more than 59,000 books.

His youngest daughter, Mary Winchester, describes the living room as "a fortress of books around where he sat and read." Many rooms had books, books, and more books -- and no furniture. This was not a case of hoarding though. These books were organised, with dehumidifiers running all the time, keeping the books in good condition. Prof. Thomas had a book catalogue in spiral notebooks, with entries noting the specific location of each book.

In March 2013 the collection went to auction. There were no bidders, as the magnitude of the collection astounded collectors and impeded its sale. Cataloguing all the books would be daunting in itself, so booksellers wanted to cherry-pick the best titles and leave the rest to the family to liquidate. Mary Winchester's husband even joked that they could advertise "LIBRARY FOR SALE; COMES WITH HOUSE." More »

The Little Free Library movement in action

Installed on the front fence and stocked initially with our own books, the Little Free Library has become a hot spot for local readers, stroller pushers, and dog walkers, who swap out favourites and exchange kudos and critiques, in the process getting to know neighbours they’ve nodded to in passing, but never actually spoken to. Closure of fisheries’ libraries called a ‘disaster’ for science

Seven libraries across Canada, belonging to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), are to close by fall of 2013, "including two that have been amassing books and technical reports on the aquatic realm for more than a century."

The libraries are home to the 50 illustrated volumes from Britain’s Challenger expedition that sailed the seas in the late 1800s exploring the mysteries of the deep.

The shelves heave with reports detailing the DDT pollution that wiped out young salmon in New Brunswick’s “rivers of death” in the 1950s. And they contain vivid reminders of native fisheries, Canada’s once vast cod stocks and the U.S. submarines that prowled the quiet fjords along the B.C. coast in the 1940s — history that is being packed into boxes as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans “consolidates” its world-class library collection.

So why is this a disaster?

Like us, sculptor Jodi Harvey-Brown loves to read, and she goes further by harnessing her creativity and talent, bringing to life the stories within those books. Characters we could only previously imagine inside our heads now literally come out of the pages, their stories plain to see.

Lumio: A Portable Light that Folds like a Book

This is such a simple, elegant, and brilliant idea. (Yes, that was a pun.) From the Kickstarter page:

It's very simple and intuitive. The lamp automatically turns on and off as you open and close the cover. A flexible and durable spine design allows you to control brightness by adjusting the angle without a switch or button. Lumio eliminates the hassle of walking across the room to find a light switch.

Interest in this project has been very high. Its tight schedule will have the Lumio available later this year, so let's keep our eyes open! More»

The Four Commandments of Reading for Self-Education

Photo credit: swamibu (from flickr.com)

Some books are for escapism, for entertainment. Other books can teach us lessons, to help us improve our lives. Sometimes, the same book can offer us both. Here is a set of guidelines for achieving wisdom through reading.

The Four Commandments of Reading for Self-Education

  1. A book is only as good as what you remember from it;
  2. Actually reading is more important than reading fast;
  3. Don’t be afraid to burn books;
  4. Read books to become better at non-books.

WINNIE ILLE PU by A.A. Milnei

That's right: this is Winnie The Pooh by A.A. Milne, as translated into Latin by Alexander Lenard. There is not a single page in English, or in any other language but Latin, for that matter. It was published in December 1960 and landed on The New York Times bestseller list for 20 weeks, selling 125,000 copies in 21 editions.

Alexander Lenard was an Hungarian-born doctor with an Austrian medical degree. As a refugee in 1952, he re-settled in Brazil where he spent seven years working on translating Pooh into Pu. The original edition of the book was self-published, as there was a lack of interest from Brazilian and English publishers. In 1984, Winnie Ille Pu was back in the bookstores, nearly 25 years after initial publication.

Winnie Ille Pu is more than just a Latin translation of a beloved children's book though. Interested in taking a peek at the content? Here's a PDF download ».

The New York Times itself published a retrospective of the book in 1984: "Winnie Ille Pu nearly XXV years later" »

There have been other translations into Latin of modern stories. These include Olivia, The Three Blind Mice, Harry Potter, The Little Prince, and some Dr. Seuss books (How The Grinch Stole Christmas, The Cat In The Hat, Green Eggs And Ham). Read more at Mental Floss »
